SAN DIEGO -- Cole Hamels dominated San Diego again as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Padres 5-2 on Wednesday night, ending a three-game losing skid. Hamels (9-7) struck out nine in seven innings and allowed a run as he scattered seven hits and a walk. It marked Hamels 21st straight start in which he was charged with three runs or less. Over that span he is 8-4 with a 1.86 ERA. Only the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw (1.26) has a better ERA. Hamels, who attended nearby Rancho Bernardo High and grew up a Padres fan, is 9-2 against San Diego. Ben Revere had two RBIs and two hits to pace the Phillies. Yangervis Solarte, Tommy Medica and Cameron Maybin each had two hits for the Padres. Eric Stults (7-17) took the loss, pitching 4 1-3 innings and giving up four runs and six hits. His 17th loss ties the Phillies A.J. Burnett, who lost Tuesday night, for the most in the majors. Stults retired 12 straight before the Phillies opened the fifth with four consecutive singles. The fourth one, by Freddy Galvis, drove in Darin Ruf and Domonic Brown for a 2-1 lead. After Hamels sacrifice bunt, Reveres two-run double chased Stults and pushed the Phillies ahead 4-1. In the fifth, Carlos Ruizs sacrifice fly scored Ruf for a 5-1 cushion, after Ruf doubled and advanced to third. The Padres struck first in the fourth when Maybins second hit drove in Medica. After leading off the inning with his second single, Medica stole second base and scored easily on Maybins single. In the previous inning the Padres loaded the based when Hamels walked Stults, which followed Medica and Maybin hits. But Solarte flied out to right to end the threat. TRAINERS ROOM Padres: RHP Joaquin Benoit threw another bullpen session on Wednesday and manager Bud Black said Benoit could be available to pitch on Friday, when the Padres open a three-game series against the visiting Giants. Benoit hasnt worked since Aug. 26 because of a sore right shoulder. . Black said there was no update on RHP Tyson Ross and when he might pitch again. Ross is skipping his Thursday start because of soreness in his right arm. Phillies: SS Jimmy Rollins, out of the lineup since Sept. 8 with a strained left hamstring, is increasing his baseball activities. Rollins took ground balls during batting practice. UP NEXT Phillies RHP Kyle Kendrick (9-12, 4.72 ERA), who pitched six strong innings to beat San Diego on June 12, will face Padres LHP Robbie Erlin (3-4, 4.89). According to MASN.com, the Os have an agreement in place for a minor-league deal with left-hander Johan Santana, who did not pitch in the majors last season, and last took the mound for the New York Mets during an injury- plagued 2012. Santana missed the entire 2011 season after originally tearing his pitching shoulder in September of the 2010 campaign. The four-time All Star, returned from his year-long absence to start the 2012 opener for New York, and on June 1 tossed the first no-hitter in Mets history, on a career-high 134 pitches. Accomplishing the feat seemed to have devastating after effects, as Santana went just 3-7 over hiis next 10 starts with an 8.dddddddddddd27 earned run average. Battling ankle, back and shoulder issues, the Mets eventually shut him down for good in mid-August. Shortly after his arrival at last years spring training, Santana was diagnosed with left shoulder weakness. He had season-ending surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder in late March. The Mets decided not to pick up the 2014 option on his contract. Since arriving in the majors during the 2000 season with Minnesota, the 34- year-old native of Venezuela has compiled a 139-78 record and 3.20 ERA in 360 appearances (284 starts).
